Letter from SD83 Board
On behalf of North Okanagan-Shuswap School District No. 83’s Board of Education, I would sincerely like to express the heartfelt concern that we have for students, families, staff, Indigenous bands, and communities who are facing the impacts of the wildfires in the Secwepemc region. Safety and well-being are our top priorities for everyone affected during these trying times, and we are committed to assisting and supporting District Staff as they discuss plans to proactively help our communities.
We are inspired by Superintendent Kriger’s encouraging messages and resourceful links for families, staff, and communities. It is truly heartwarming to see communities and Indigenous bands working together to offer safe havens for relocation – your unity makes us proud.
Our gratitude extends to the firefighters, volunteers, frontline workers, community leaders, and emergency personnel dedicating tireless efforts to support our region. Thank you, and kukwstsétsemc to you all.
To the families, community members, local bands, and local businesses impacted by these devastating fires – we stand with you in empathy. We acknowledge the significant losses which you have endured, and hope the community’s collective support offers some solace.
To our dedicated School District 83 Staff – we understand that each of you is affected, whether under evacuation orders or alerts, or simply concerned about the students whom you serve. Your strength, compassion, and professionalism shine through. Remember, you have access to the Employee Assistance Program, or you can reach out to your school’s Principal, site Supervisor/Director, or our Senior Leadership Team for support. Special mention to the committed group of bus drivers who assisted with evacuation procedures – your efforts are truly appreciated.
The well-being of all students, families, staff, and communities is certainly on the minds of SD83 Trustees, and we stand alongside you to provide strength and hope as we navigate these challenging times together.
Sincerely,
Marianne VanBuskirk, Chairperson
Board of Education, School District No. 83 (North Okanagan-Shuswap)
