National Indigenous People’s Day

Posted on 2021-06-21 07:00:00 +0000 UTC

Today, we celebrated National Indigenous Peoples Day and also celebrated the hanging of our two territorial flags. At 9am Chief Wayne Christian and Knowledge Keep Edna Felix joined the Extreme Team for an online Assembly. Mrs. Moore acknowledged our territories and spoke about the importance of this day as well as the importance of our two flags. We talked about the symbols on the flags and what they represent. Edna Felxi drummed an honor song. Chief Christian spoke and his words were very powerful. He spoke about how important it is for his people to feel welcome. He also spoke about inclusion and how all children need to feel safe and welcome. His speech was very moving and highlights the importance fo schools being a safe place for all.

During the day, teams met with our Indigenous staff to learn two traditional stick games. They toured through the gym to see the flags and then they will be given a piece of Bannock prepared by Knowledge Keeper, Diane Jewell.

As well, we did a special photo with each team that we will on display on our website. The photo was not conencted to this day but because we had teams together it allowed us to capture a photo of each team. The photos will be shown on our website over summer. A huge thank you to Katie Taber, our Indigenous Success Teacher for organizing this special day and to Tyler Anderson for his support. We hope the day was meaningful for our students.
